On a whim I bought some Canadian grown wild rice at the market knowing absolutely nothing about it but it seemed like a great opportunity to try something new. The size and colour was completely different from your conventional rice and I think that’s what I loved the most about it.
Figuring out how to cook it proved to be a little more challenging- there was clearly an opportunity for more information to share.
After what felt like too long blog surfing and power scrolling through people’s life stories I found what I needed! Spoiler alert: If you cook it like brown rice you’ll be just fine.
Cooked Canadian Wild Rice
Note: This rice is huge, 1 cup of raw wild rice turns into close to 4 cups of cooked rice.
Below is a summary of the different ways to cook wild rice.
Instapot/ Pressure Cooker (My chosen method)
1 cup wild rice
1 1/3 cups water
pinch of salt
Combine all ingredients together in your instapot, cook on high pressure for 20 minutes and let steam release. Floof with a fork, and enjoy.
Stovetop Method
1 cup wild rice
1 1/3 cup water
Cover rice with water and let sit overnight/ 8 hours
The next day- rinse the rice and add to a fresh put of water (another 1 1/3 cup)
Cook for 20 minutes.
Forgot to soak your rice? That’s fine too! Just cook it for 45 minutes instead.
Rice Cooker Method
1 cup wild rice
1 1/3 cup water
pinch of salt?
Instructions: We bought a rice cooker, it died, it was replaced by the company under warranty, it too died. So for now, I have no idea how long it would take to cook Canadian Wild Rice in a rice cooker sorry LOL.
